A while back I was reading a Warhammer 40,000 book trilogy based around the Night Lords legion (highly recommend it if you like dark sci-fi and don't mind a fair amount of blood and gore, they're very well written and good reads) and I found this in the second book, Blood Reaver.
The woman this is referring to, Octavia, was taken from her previous life by the Night Lords to help navigate their ship through the Warp, or the space between space, since she was born with a third eye on her forehead that lets her steer the ship away from all the nasties that live in the Warp and want to eat everything. Given the setting and the Night Lords' background, living conditions on the ship are pretty damn shitty. This scene takes place after she's been with them for several months.
They're docked at a lowlife space station, and this is the first time Octavia's had a shower since she was taken, though she was still cleaner than most of the ship's crew.
"She risked a glance down at her figure, though it took surprising courage to do so. While she was far from the emaciated wraith she'd expected to see, her skin was a pale palette, and the trails of blue veins showed faintly beneath her flesh. Still, she had to confess she felt unhealthier than she looked. Evidently the nutrient-rich gruel that served as shipboard fare was more nourishing than its sandpaper taste suggested.
With her nose wrinkled, she picked a little fluff, the same midnight blue of Legion slave clothing, from her navel. *Delightful.*
With a quiet laugh, she flicked it away."
It's not much, but I wasn't expecting it, so it caught my attention. :P
